Support Gordon McDowell

Many of the video’s you find on this site (more will follow) are produced by Gordon McDowell. And if you search youtube for ‘molten salt reactors’ ‘LFTR’ and many other search words, many of the video’s you find are produced by Gordon McDowell.

Here’s how he introduces himself on his Youtube channel: Videographer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Thorium & MSR advocate. Working to educate public on Molten Salt Reactors, Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors, and the reasons that today’s reactors are not what nuclear power ought to be.

I’d say Gordon McDowell is also the unnamed historian of the molten salt reactor movement. Over the past years, he posted about 280 video’s. Some lengthy, technical and pretty basic, others more smoothly edited and well cared – but always highly informative and carrying is very own signature.

Like all of us he has a slight geographical bias, but on the other hand, some of the most promising developments are happening close to where he lives. On other occasions, he comes with creative solutions like having a lab tour of Per Peterson of UCB given to Kirk Sorensen of Flibe Energy filmed by Bram Cohen (yeah, that Bram Cohen of BitTorent – he is a fan of the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor).

So for that part of the world, Gordon McDowell is our ears and eyes. And if he can make a full time job out of it, he’ll be even better ears and eyes.
Your support is money very well spent. Here’s his donation page on Patreon (don’t worry, the procedure takes it one step at a time):

Here’s some examples of Gordon’s video’s that you might find instructive.

Helen Caldicott – “Th” Thorium Documentary

Helen Caldicott is the world’s most prominent anti-nuclear activist. Helen has been featured on CNN, 60 Minutes, CBC and Democracy Now speaking about the dangers of nuclear power and radiation. In this documentary, McDowell analyses her arguments in depth. His analysis leaves the viewer wondering why a vehement anti-nuclear activist does not bring any solid evidence to support her case. The documentary also contains a load of instructive material about LFTR, msr’s and the history of tacky subjects like the linear non threshold theory.

MSRE: Alvin Weinberg’s Molten Salt Reactor Experiment – “Th” Thorium Documentary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory was the home of Alvin Weinberg’s Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. The MSRE proved that a fission reaction in molten fluoride salts could be contained in Hastelloy-N, and that a molten salt fueled reactor concept was viable.
In this documentary, Kirk Sorensen and Bryony Worthington meet several of the Oak Ridge researchers, now in their 80s, who worked on the MSRE in the 1960s. Much of the material here is also in the video above, but now without the distracting voice of ms Caldicott.

Thorium can give humanity clean, pollution free energy | Kirk Sorensen | TEDxColoradoSprings

Here’s a recording of a TED talk by Kirk Sorensen. Gordon McDowell comments: “Kirk Sorensen stumbled across thorium while doing research on how to power a lunar community. Thorium is a cleaner, safer, and more abundant nuclear fuel—one that Kirk believes will revolutionize how we produce our energy.”

Dr. Arjun Makhijani – “Nuclear Reactors Create 30 Bombs of Plutonium Every Year”

Another nice debunking job of Gordon McDowell. Watch how Arjun Makhijani’s statement to the Minnesota Senate, that “Every nuclear plant generates about 30 bombs worth of Plutonium every year” is worth looking at in detail.
